The Fort Bend Herald is reporting:
Lawmakers and elected officials from Fort Bend County celebrated the passing of a new state law in the name of a county resident who died three years ago.
The Lisa Torry Smith Act was passed by the Texas Legislature and was signed by Gov. Greg Abbott last month, and on Tuesday, Fort Bend County District Attorney Brian Middleton invited the Smith family to help congratulate the bill becoming law.
The new law states that a driver can be charged with a Class A misdemeanor if the driver causes bodily injury to a person walking in a crosswalk. The charge becomes a felony if the driver causes serious bodily injury.
“We finally have justice for Lisa Torry Smith,” Middleton said. “It is an example of good governance, putting public safety ahead of partisanship.”
